Meet Sammy

We got Sammy on October 14th when he was just 3 weeks old. Someone found him and his 2 brothers crying in an empty lot. The guy who lives next door to the empty lot said that they had been crying there for days and that he wasn't going to do anything about them except just let them die. So the guy who found them asked Empty Lot Guy if he could keep them and Empty Lot Guy gladly accepted. We ended up with one of the kittens, Sammy.

Sammy didn't have a single second of shyness. When we first brought him home, we opened the pet carrier, he jumped out and started purring and hanging out with us.

When we got him we were told that he was already eating solid food, so we bought him a can of kitten food and served him a third of the can. He practically inhaled it!

Later we learned that he wasn't ready yet for solid food, so we took him back to his kitten formula. The formula has to be mixed with water to be served and what sucks about it is that it's harder to mix than pancake formula. It takes forever! Through trial and error I found out that if the water is warm it's easier to get the perfect mix. So I heat it in the microwave, mix it, heat it, mix it and serve it. There are two problems with that:

1) Sammy's complaininess:

Sammy behaves like this whenever I'm making his food, which is why I try to do it while he is distracted. But he can hear me a mile away, and then he comes to the kitchen running and acts like this, as if it had been his idea! No matter what he was doing, the second he sees me preparing his food he gets this extremely urgent need to eat, you'd think he had been starving for days!

2) Sammy's Jeff Lewisness:

I discovered this one day when I gave Sammy his food, he had been acting all starved like you just saw, but when I gave him his food he tried it once and continued whining as if I hadn't given him any food yet! I pointed him to it, nothing. He was complaining and complaining, then he went to the trash can like he was looking for food! I was like WTH! He just wouldn't stop complaining, so I remixed his food again and nothing, just more complaints. I felt all impotent, like what's wrong with this poor guy?! So I reheated his food a little and that's what it was! Sammy is the Jeff Lewis of cats, just like Jeff likes his Starbucks coffee at exactly 140 degrees Sammy demands to have his food at a certain specific temperature and when it's not like that, he won't eat it and will just bitch until it's perfect.

That's not his only peculiarity, since Sammy spent his kittenhood without his mom he now has issues:

The first time I saw him doing that my heart broke, but I did some research and learned that this behavior was a natural consequence of his early separation and that it may continue all of his life :( But if it makes him feel good I guess it's not bad, it's not like he's doing crack or anything.

Here he is playing with my disco balls curtain:

He has a thing for curtains, also tags, watches, rings, pens, bags and everything Mac. Naturally he plays with the cables, likes to be next to the iMac's fan, he enjoys standing on the Airport base and licking the mouse, but what he loves more than anything in this world is to walk on the keyboard. This little hobby has made him an active Apple user; he replies to ads, scrobbles songs to Last.fm and posts a few things here and there. Actually this post was written by him.

j/k.
